Early Treatment
Though an orthodontist can enhance a smile at any age, there is an optimal time period to begin treatment. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children be evaluated by a certified orthodontist, like Dr. Kaufman, by the age of seven. Beginning treatment at this time ensures the greatest result and the least amount of time and expense. While most children at this age are not ready to begin full orthodontic treatment, many young patients have traumatic bites or abnormal growth problems that can be treated much easier if diagnosed early.
This phase of treatment is called interceptive orthodontics, and routinely minimizes the need for more complex treatments, such as the extraction of permanent teeth. Among other things, interceptive treatment creates room for crowded erupting teeth, preserves space for unerupted teeth and creates facial symmetry by influencing jaw growth.
Other benefits of interceptive treatment:
- Reduces the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
- Reduces the need for tooth removal
- Reduces treatment time with braces
Is your child a candidate for orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontics is not merely for improving the aesthetics of the smile; orthodontic treatment improves bad bites (malocclusions). Malocclusions occur as a result of tooth or jaw misalignment. Malocclusions affect the way you smile, chew and clean your teeth.
Untreated malocclusions can result in a variety of problems. Crowded teeth are more difficult to properly brush and floss, which may contribute to tooth decay and/or gum disease. Protruding teeth are more susceptible to accidental chipping.
Young patients are going though rapid growth patterns. With the proper guidance, Dr. Kaufman can utilize this growth to achieve the optimal result: a great, healthy smile. Full orthodontic treatment usually begins at age 10-12, but varies, depending on the individual.
It is in the best interest of the child to be seen earlier than later. Dr. Kaufman can determine the absolute best time to begin orthodontic treatment.
