Wisdom Teeth: Myths, Facts, and the Clinical Reality

When those third molars—better known as wisdom teeth—start making their appearance, it often comes with a side of worry and a lot of conflicting advice. At Lazzara Smiles, we believe that being informed is the first step toward a healthy, confident smile.

Myth vs. Fact: Setting the Record Straight

Myth #1: Everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed. The Reality: Not necessarily! If your wisdom teeth are healthy, fully erupted (grown in), positioned correctly, and you can clean them properly, they might be able to stay. However, because our jaws have evolved to be smaller, most people simply don't have the "real estate" for four extra molars.

Myth #2: Wisdom teeth always cause your front teeth to shift. The Reality: While it feels like those back teeth are "pushing" everything forward, clinical studies show that wisdom teeth aren't the sole culprit for late-stage crowding. Teeth naturally tend to drift forward as we age. That said, an impacted wisdom tooth can still cause localized damage to neighboring roots, which is why we monitor them closely!

Myth #3: If they don't hurt, they aren't a problem. The Reality: This is the big one. Wisdom teeth can be "silent" troublemakers. They can develop cysts, contribute to gum disease, or cause decay in the adjacent second molars long before you feel a single ache.

The Clinical Realities: Why We Monitor Your Progress

As experts in tooth movement and jaw alignment, Dr. Lazzara looks at the "big picture" of your oral health. If we identify the following issues, we will provide a consultation and referral to a trusted oral surgery specialist:

  • Impaction: The tooth is stuck under the gum or bone, often growing at an angle.

  • Crowding Risks: Even if they don't push front teeth, they can make it impossible to maintain proper hygiene in the back of the mouth.

  • Infection and Inflammation: Partially erupted teeth create a "pocket" where bacteria thrive, leading to painful swelling.

What to Expect

If a referral for extraction is the best path for your smile, don't sweat it! Our team is here to guide you through the process and ensure your orthodontic progress stays on track. We focus on making every part of your treatment—from braces to maintenance—an encouraging and positive experience.
