Fall Is Busy. Here's How Rochester Families Fit Orthodontic Visits Around School, Sports, and the Holidays
If your family calendar looks anything like most Rochester calendars right now, October is a lot. School is in full swing, modified and travel sports are wrapping up their fall seasons while winter tryouts sneak onto the schedule, there are Halloween costumes to sort out, and somewhere in the back of your mind Thanksgiving and the December holidays are already lining up.
Orthodontic appointments have a way of getting squeezed in the middle of all that. Here at Lazzara Smiles we see it every fall: a visit gets pushed once because of a game, then again because of a half day, and suddenly it has been a lot longer than planned since anyone looked at those brackets or aligner trays. The good news is that a little planning goes a long way. This guide walks through how to keep braces and Invisalign treatment moving through the busiest stretch of the year.
Why staying on schedule matters during orthodontic treatment
Braces and clear aligners work by applying gentle, steady pressure over time. Each visit is a planned checkpoint. With braces, Dr. Lazzara may change a wire, adjust elastics, or check how individual teeth are responding. With Invisalign, check-ins are how we confirm that teeth are tracking with the trays and decide when you are ready for the next set.
Missing one appointment is not a disaster, and life happens. But when visits keep sliding, small issues can go unnoticed for longer: a loose bracket that is no longer doing its job, elastics that are not being worn as often as they should be, or aligners that are not fitting quite right. Those things are easy to fix when we catch them early. The longer they go, the more likely it is that treatment takes longer than it needed to. For most families, that is the real cost of a missed visit: not anything dramatic, just extra months in braces.
Know our hours and plan around them
Our Rochester office at 925 E Henrietta Rd is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. If you know those windows ahead of time, it gets a lot easier to look at a busy week and spot the openings.
A few patterns we see work well for local families:
Early morning visits before school or work, so nobody misses much of the day.
Friday morning visits, which pair nicely with an easier end to the week.
Days off and half days on your district's calendar. Many Monroe County schools have scheduled days off and early dismissals in the fall, and those slots tend to go quickly, so book them as soon as the calendar comes out.
Booking the next visit before you leave the office, while you are standing at the front desk and everyone's calendars are fresh in mind.
That last one is the simplest habit of all. If you leave without the next appointment on the books, it is easy for weeks to go by before anyone remembers to call.
Working around fall sports
Fall is peak season for soccer, football, cross country, field hockey, volleyball, and cheer, and then winter sports like hockey and basketball start right behind them. Practice schedules change week to week and games get moved, which is exactly how orthodontic visits end up getting bumped.
A couple of ideas that help:
Ask your coach for the full season schedule early, and look for the weeks with the lightest load.
Avoid booking a wire change the morning of a big game if your child tends to be sore for a day or two afterward. A visit earlier in the week gives teeth time to settle down.
Keep a mouthguard that works with braces in the sports bag. If you are not sure which type to use, ask us at your next visit.
If a bracket comes loose or a wire starts poking during a game or practice, call the office so we can tell you whether it needs to be seen right away or can wait until your next visit.
Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the holiday stretch
Halloween is just a few weeks away, and the sticky, chewy, and hard candy that comes home in those pillowcases is some of the toughest stuff on brackets and wires. Broken brackets tend to show up in the days after Halloween, so it helps to have your next visit already scheduled for early November. If something does come loose, you will already have time on the books for us to take care of it.
Thanksgiving week and the stretch between mid-December and New Year's are the other two crunch periods. School breaks, college kids home for the holidays, and families traveling all mean those weeks book up early. If you want an appointment over winter break, it is worth asking about it now rather than in December.
If you are traveling, plan ahead:
Braces patients: pack orthodontic wax, a travel toothbrush, floss threaders or picks, and any elastics you have been prescribed, plus a few extras.
Invisalign patients: bring your case, your current trays, and your previous set as a backup, and keep track of when you are due to switch.
Write down the office phone number, (585) 424-6400, so you can call with questions while you are away.
A word for adults in treatment
Many of our patients are adults balancing work, kids, and their own care, and the fall rush hits them too. Invisalign is popular with busy adults in part because there is no wire to adjust, but those check-ins still matter. Put your own appointments on the same family calendar as everyone else's, and if you work near Henrietta or Brighton, an early morning visit on the way in can be the least disruptive option.
Adults who are still deciding about treatment sometimes like to get the conversation started without a trip to the office. Our virtual consultation option on toothmover.com is an easy first step that fits into a lunch break.
Don't forget year-end benefits
We covered this in more detail in our September post, but it is worth a quick reminder as the year winds down. If your family has a flexible spending account, many plans require you to use the money by December 31, and some dental plans with orthodontic benefits reset in January. If you have been thinking about starting treatment, or you have orthodontic costs coming up, an appointment in October or November leaves time to sort out the paperwork before the holidays take over. Check your plan's specific rules, and our front desk team can help you understand how your benefits apply.
What to do if you need to reschedule
Plans change, and we understand that. If something comes up, the most helpful thing you can do is call us as soon as you know. That gives us a better chance of finding you another time that works and lets us offer your original slot to another family who needs it.
When you call, let us know if anything is going on with the braces or aligners: a loose bracket, a poking wire, a tray that does not seem to fit, or elastics you have run out of. Some of those things are worth a quick visit even if your regular appointment is a few weeks away.
Keep your smile on track this season
Fall in Western New York goes by fast. One day it is apple picking and foliage, and the next it is snow tires and holiday shopping. A little planning now keeps orthodontic care from getting lost in the shuffle, and it is one of the simplest ways to help treatment finish on time.
